Toyota Recall | Toyota and Scion recall

Japan's Toyota Motors Corp. is recalling about 95,700 Toyota and Scion vehicles sold in the US because ice may accumulate in the breaking systems and will make it harder for drivers to slowdown, decrease breaking power and lengthen breaking distance.

The company said that the recall will cover 2009 and 2010 models of Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix and 2008 and 2009 Scion XD vehicles.

Toyota's recall applies to vehicle owners in the 19 states with extreme low temperatures. These states are: Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

US debt clock

The US debt clock is a billboard size digital display and is currently installed on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. I have seen the picture and posted it here. It is like the pollution digital display.

It made headlines months ago when the US debt surpassed the $10 Trillion mark and it runs out of sufficient digits to display the amount. The US debt clock reminds us of the bad times we are passing through.

The bad times am referring to is the recession that the US and the world is experiencing now. The recession is I think getting to the level of the Great Depression of 1930s where unemployment rate reached more than 20%. And the working people are lining the streets for food coupons.

Now the US unemployment rate is nearing 10% and it is going up and the other industrialised countries are having these same characterization. More business establishments are cutting off jobs. More banks and other financial institutions are going bankrupt and seeking the aid of the government to weather the economic storm, the Wall Street meltdown. We are witness to the fall of the world biggest insurance company AIG, the crash of the US automotive industry, the burst of the housing bubble, etcetera.

The US debt clock reminds the people to rethink what the system of greed is all about. Let us think for long term solutions to the problem of the system.

Cash For Refrigerators

A new stimulus plan is in the offing, this time it is cash for refrigerators. This cash for clunkers type federal program amounting to $300 million from the federal budget is targetting to boost the sales of the home appliances makers who experienced the worst in its business cycle.

The program is part of the stimulus plan of the Obama administration which was passed early this year. The Energy Department expects most of the $300 million fund to be awarded by November. Energy secretary Steven Chu said that "these rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulates the economy".

But unlike the cash for clunkers program, consumers have to trade their old appliances. Who will qualify? Only those appliances with Energy Star seal will qualify or about 55% of the appliances in 2008 met this standard.

The cash for refrigerators will help the beleaguered Whirlpool, Electrolux and General Electric appliances makers.

So throw your old refrigerators and help the economy.

Miss Universe 2009 winner

Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez is the winner of the Miss Universe 2009 beauty pageant which was held in the Bahamas for the first time. A repeat performance of Venezuela.

Contestants from 84 countries vied for the coveted title, and Venezuela repeated it again.

Latin American beauties dominated the pageant. Latina beauties are mass produced in the beauty factories of Venezuela.

The Philippine contestant Pamela Bianca Manalo failed to land even in the top 15 finalist of the Miss Universe 2009.

Cash for Clunkers ending

The popular program cash for clunkers will end on Monday 8:00 PM after almost depleting the $3 Billion funding in a month. The program helps the ailing car industry but also creates problems to car dealers.

But President Obama and government officials declared the program a success.

Secretary of Transportation Ray La Hood said the program "has been a lifeline to the automobile industry, jump starting a major sector of the industry and putting people back to work". He added that the department was "working toward an orderly wind down of this very popular program".

The cash for clunkers program has also created problems to car dealers, many of them still yet to be repaid for the clunker deals they made. Under the cash for clunkers program, dealers take rebates of $3,500 or $4,500 off the price of a new vehicle, in return for the trade in old inefficient cars that are sent to the scrap yard. Then they must submit application papers with proper documentation to be repaid. Many dealers are still on the wait for their unpaid claims.

According to some dealers there was a lot of bureaucracy int his cash for clunkers program.

But President Obama and LaHood pledge that dealers will get their money back.

Alright, everybody happy? The car industrialist, the Obama government and the dealers, they will all profit from this cash for clunkers program. But wait, some people are saying that sales of cars will drop in the following months because people have already bought new cars?

meteor shower august 2009

A spectacular show for sky watchers, a meteor shower (Perseid meteor shower they called) will happen this whole week, but the best time is on Tuesday and Wednesday night until 5am.

The meteor shower showers happens only annually so if you want to see natural phenomenon watch it, that is if the weather permits.

Chino Prison Riot

About 250 prisoners were injured in the Chino Prison Riot last Saturday the California Institution for Men in Chino, California. Injuries from ranged mostly from stab wounds and head injuries. Fire was ignited that caused damages to the buildings.

The riot was likely a result of tensions between Hispanic and Black prisoners. More than 1000 prisoners were involved in the Chino prison riot.

Authorities responded to the Chino prison riots, with pepper spray, batons, foam projectiles to remove the inmates who holed up inside the facility.

As a result of the Chino prison riot, visitations to all the Southern California prison was suspended.

Monk Season 8| Last Episode

The eight and final season of Monk will be aired starting Friday August 7, 2009 and will end on Dec 4 , 2009.

Monk is a comical crime drama, mystery series starring Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk, a private detective and consultant of the homicide unit.

Monk was brilliant investigator of San Francisco Police Department that suffered nervous breakdown when his wife was killed in a bombing incident that he thinks he was the target.

He had certain phobias like fear of heights, germs, milk and others that makes his character funny and comical. His obsessive-compulsive disorder habits led to awkwardly situation and cause problems to people around him.

Monk is a show that imparts some knowledge about police procedures and very good investigative work. Police investigators and people who would like to be investigative will learn a good deal of methods. And a lot of laughter, that we need in these times of economic recession.

I am glued to the TV whenever I watched Monk, fearing that I will miss something. Is this a kind of phobia? LOL.

So folks, dont miss the the final episode. There is no season 9 coming.

Cash for Clunkers $2 Billion Refill

The cash for clunkers program will be refilled, courtesy of the Senate and to be signed by President Obama into law, with $2 billion dollars more to help the car owners to purchase new ones and boost the US economy, in particular the car industry.

President Obama said: "Now more American consumers will have the chance to purchase newer, more fuel efficient cars and the American economy will continue to get a much-needed boost."

This was the statement after the Senate approved the bill tripling the $1 billion cash for clunkers program.

So the cash for clunkers progam will be injected and refilled with much needed cash amounting to $2billion do that will last until Labor Day.

With this cash for clunkers program, more than $775 million was already spent and almost 185,000 new vehicles were sold. Car dealers registered a boost in sales in July and Ford Motor Co. increased in sales.

Owners of passenger cars, old SUVs, vans and pickups, are eligible to vouchers worth $3,500 to $4,500 if they trade-in their gas guzzlers, under the cash for clunkers program. Is it ok for you or do you want some more?

Where will the trade in vehicles go? They will be crushed and shredded.

Or maybe some will be thrown into to some countries where second hand car is still a good car?

Your very lucky car owners. How about those without cars?

These lunar eclipse time would guide those who are interested to witness another natural phenomenon, after the solar eclipse last month. This time, August 5, 2009, a lunar eclipse.

The exact time of lunar eclipse will be visible at New Jersey, Boston, Atlanta 18:oo, end at 21:14, Chicago and Houston and Dallas at 17:04 ends at 20: 14. New York and Philadelphia 18:04 and will end at 21:14.

No eclipse at last LA, San Francisco and Seattle. New York and Philadelphia 18:04 ends 21:14.

Lunar eclipse woul be visible in other parts of the world, in the Middle Eastern countries and Africa. Also in Europe; London, France and Germany.

Cory Aquino Nalibing Na| People Power Pwede pa?

Nalibing na si dating Pangulong Corazon Cojuangco Aquino (1933-2009). Isang taon ding nakipaglaban sa sakit na kanser sa bituka si Gng. Aquino. Na-confine siya sa Makati Medical Center ng may isang buwan. Namatay siya noong July 31, 2009 sa ganap na 3:18 ng madaling araw.

Ibinurol noong una sa La Salle Gym sa Greenhills at noong nakaraang Lunes ay inilipat sa Manila Cathedral. Libo-libo ang pumila para masilayan sa huling pagkakataon ang dating pangulo. Dumagsa ang mga tao mula sa ibat ibang antas ng buhay sa burol ni Cory at nagpakita ng kanilang simpatiya at pagmamahal sa "housewife" na lumaban kay Marcos noong magpatawag ng snap election noong 1985.

Ang nangyaring burol at libing ni Cory ay maihahambing sa burol at libing ni Ninoy. Maraming tao ang nagkusang pumunta at nakiramay sa burol hanggang sa libing. Lumaganap ang dilaw na kulay bilang suporta at simpatya sa martir na si Ninoy, mahigpit na katunggali ni Marcos, na pinaslang matapos arestuhin pagkalapag ng kaniyang sinakyang eroplano .

Inilibing si Cory katabi ng nitso ng kanyang asawang si Senator Ninoy Aquino, matapos ang humigit kumulang 8 oras na paglalakbay mula Manila Cathedral sa Intramuros, Maynila hanggang sa kanyang huling hantungan sa Manila Memorial Park sa Paranaque City.

Ang tanya ng mga awtoridad ay may 150 libong tao ang nag-abang sa ruta na dinaanan ng libing. Marami ang naghintay ng mahabang oras at di inalintan na mabasa ng ulan para masilayan sa huling pagkakataon ang dating pangulo ng Pilipinas na naging simbolo ng laban kay Marcos. At maging saksi sa isang makasaysayang pangyayari sa bansa.

According to Brazilian police, Arturo Gatti's death is suicide. And according to his wife she is innocent and was release in jail.

So what is the reason behind Gatti's death or suicide?

Gatti, was found dead in his hotel room in Pernambuco, Brazil. Gatti's wife, was charged with murder. Her purse strap stained with blood. She could not explain staying in hotel room for more than 10 hours without knowing Gatti' s dead. According to a friend, Gatti and his wife were having problems and about to separate.

Gatti was one of the best boxer in the world. He earned fame and prize money. His boxing record 40 wins, 31 by knockout, 9 losses out of 49 fights. He was one of the exciting boxer in the world.

It put questions into my mind. Why? Why? A good boxer like Thunder (his nickname), in the prime of his life will do that?

Cory Aquino funeral

Thousands line the streets from Greenhills to Intramuros.

Thousands of mourners and supporters of the late former president Cory Aquino, lined up the streets stretching from Greenhills to Manila Cathedral in Intramuros. The funeral convoy or the funeral cortege start at 11 AM at La Salle Greenhills Gym and arrive 4PM at the Manila Cathedral.

In Ayala Makati, the financial district, employees rain confetti and thousands waving yellow flags, ribbons and anything yellow colored to show their sympathy to the late president who was considered the icon of democracy in the struggle against the Marcos dictatorial rule. The convoy stops at the Ninoy Aquino Monument while people sang Bayan Ko, a nationalist song.

People from all walks of life, rich and poor, join the funeral convoy that slowly make its way due to thousand of people who like to make a last glimpse of President Cory. People were chanting Cory, Cory. Cars use their horns. Throwing confetti. People weeping.

The Intramuros fire station blared their sirens when the funeral convoy arrived.

The scene is like the funeral of Ninoy Aquino in 1983. Thousands of people lined the streets. Waving yellow flags, wearing yellow t-shirts, etcetera. It is like People Power Revolution of 1986 that catapulted into the presidency Corazon Cojuangco Aquino, where the color of the times was yellow.

The remains of President Cory Aquino was transferred to Manila Cathedral. She will be laid to rest beside the grave of his husband Ninoy in Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque on Wednesday.
